  • What research went into writing Aubrey, Evan and the School Safety Drill?"
As a former news reporter, the author took great effort to interview school counselors, administrators and other experts to make sure the language and terminology would be appropriate for your child.
  • A message from the author to you
Dear moms and dads, I wish I didn't have to write Aubrey, Evan and the School Safety Drill; I wish there wasn't a need for it, but sadly there is. My daughter started kindergarten in Parkland, FL just six months after the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Like so many other parents, I had a lot of anxiety when it came to Code Red and lockdown drills. I hope this book can help you and your little ones start an important conversation. I worked hard to make sure the language and messages in this book are appropriate. With help from school counselors and administrators, I decided to stay away from words like "bad people" and instead used the word "stranger" when talking about why schools practice Code Red drills. But you know your child best. If you think other words will resonate better then use them. My hope is that this book can be a starting point for your conversation. My advice is to follow your gut; talk to your child's teacher, principal or pediatrician if you need help fine tuning your approach. In the meantime, I hope Aubrey, Evan and the School Safety Drill helps ease any fears your little ones (and you) may have. -Jennifer
